This tweet came to our attention this morning:-
Weird observation re today's (awsm) graphene hair dye paper. It's freely available on the @Chem_CP website: bit.ly/2FFO44k But the DOI takes you to @sciencedirect and a $31.50 paywall. Given DOI linking is best practise, this seems very anti #openscience...
You can freely access the paper "Multifunctional Graphene Hair Dye" at the first link at CellPress, yet when you click on the second link, Science Direct are selling the paper for $31.50.
One possible explanation (not yet confirmed) is that the authors might have paid for this to be open access, and ScienceDirect is 'accidentally' selling the article when it shouldnt be. This has happened many times before w/ Elsevier... http://rossmounce.co.uk/2017/02/14/elsevier-selling-access-to-open-access-again/ … cc @PaywallWatch
Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this.
